Optical sensors usually have detector areas of a just few mm? Therefore, the development of large area sensors presents a technological challenge. PerkinElmer Optoelectronics manufactures such large area image sensors and position detectors. The sensors are constructed from photodiodes and thin-film transistors using amorphous silicon technology. PerkinElmer is capable of making sensors with active surfaces of up to 40 x 40 cm?

Large area image sensors with the accompanying driving and read out electronics directly detect ultraviolet and visible light in real time, or using scintillators, X-rays without optical image distortion. The new sensors from PerkinElmer are compact and handy. As a camera system, the image sensor is radiation resistant up to the MeV range and provides a resolution of up to 16-bit grey levels.

Digital position detectors are based on a new measurement principle and are characterized by previously unattainable linearity and measurement precision. The self-calibrating sensors supply absolute position data and can be used in ambient light without additional filtering measures. Semi-transparent position detectors allow multi components staggering for simultaneous alignment of several objects. We herewith present the preliminary data of a new surface micromachined accelerometer with integral temperature compensation. Applications can be frontal impact and side impact airbag systems, vibration and motion sensors, shock and crash monitoring.
