D12 Thread Break Detection
This application utilizes individual plastic fiber optic assemblies (in the opposed sensing mode) to sense thread breaks in a textile machine (i.e. tufter, warper, etc.). A sensing beam is established across the machine so that, when a thread breaks, it will fall vertically through the sensing beam. Because the thread may not entirely block the beam as it falls through it, an AC coupled model D12 sensor is used to detect the thread¡¯s passage by seeing the momentary change in light intensity. The setup described here can detect thread diameters as small as .01 inches. A detected thread break causes the machine to stop so that the broken thread line can be replaced. The sensor is a high-powered plastic fiber optic model D12DAB6FPH-44093. This sensor operates from +10-30V dc, and has one PNP (sourcing) and one NPN (sinking) solid-state output. The sensor is capable of sensing events as short as 1 ms, and has an adjustable ¡°pulse stretcher¡± that allows the output to be held ON for 1 to 70 ms. The fiber optic assemblies used may be model PIL46U, PIL415U, or PIL430U (6', 15' and 30' long, respectively). These fibers use model L08 lenses to lengthen the sensing distance and focus the sensing beam. Fibers may be cut to length in the field for easy mounting, and other cable lengths may be ordered from the factory. The total fiber length may be up to 60'. The total distance that the lenses are mounted from each other should be less than 30'. Consult the factory for longer fiber or sensing distances.
