MINI-ARRAY AVC System Vehicle Separation

An Automated Vehicle Classification (AVC) system is designed to measure the height and count the number of axles of a given vehicle. This application uses a MINI-ARRAY measuring light screen to detect vehicle separation in an AVC system. A vehicle is sensed when the beams of the MINI-ARRAY are blocked. The treadle counts the number of axles until the beams of the MINI-ARRAY are no longer blocked. This represents the end of a vehicle. The photoelectric sensors determine the height of the vehicle. The information from the MINI-ARRAY, the photoelectric sensors, and the treadles is sent to a lane controller that assigns the number of axles to the vehicle that was detected. The most difficult situation for an AVC system is the detection of a vehicle that is towing a trailer. The resolution of the vehicle separation system must have be small enough to detect the hitch of the trailer. The MINI-ARRAY system does have a resolution that can reliably detect the trailer hitch so the trailer is included with the proper vehicle. The MINI-ARRAY system is easy to align and has a high excess gain so it will continue to operate in rain, snow, and dusty conditions. A heated enclosure is available for system operation in ambient temperatures of –25¡Æ to +70¡Æ C. The MINI-ARRAY system software has been designed to minimize false signals which can cause the AVC to give false axle count information. Most current toll booth installations require the vehicles to slow down or stop. Future systems may be designed to detect vehicles moving at highway speeds. The response time of the MINI-ARRAY system is fast enough so vehicles moving at highway speeds are easily scanned. NOTE: The MINI-ARRAY is not a vehicle profiling system in this application.
