LT3 Absorptive Material Roll Diameter Measurement

A roll of absorptive material, such as disposable diaper liner, must be monitored as the manufacturing process pays out the material. Because the rolls are large and bulky, the sensor must be mounted at a relatively long distance from the roll. As the material pays out and the roll shrinks, the sensor continuously measures the distance to its outer edge, allowing a PLC to calculate the roll's diameter, and therefore its length. Ultrasonic sensors are typically used in similar applications, but will not function here because the absorptive quality of the material will also absorb the sound waves. The LT3 sensor, mounted several meters from the front face of the roll, can detect this surface. Its analog output may provide ongoing feedback to the PLC of the rolls' current size, while the discrete output may trigger an alarm when a preset low quantity condition is reached.
